Twins 10, Phillies 3
Renneberg fans 9 in strong start
The Twins opened up their season with a convincing 10-3 win over the Phils, thanks to Jim Renneberg's tough pitching, the Phillies' own bad defense, and erratic pitching. Many thought the Phils would throw their ace, Bryan Shirley, but it was John Tillander getting the nod, and he was roughed up from the start, only lasting 2 1/3 innings, giving up 9 runs on five hits and eight walks. It was bullpen by committee after that as Kelly Pieklo and Brian Pace combined to go 3 2/3 innings of 1-run ball. The Phils got their runs off the long ball, with Shirley hitting a majestic 120-foot center field blast in the bottom of the second, and Pieklo going opposite field in the fourth for a two-run homer.
