Reds vs. Marlins
It’s safe to say the Marlins aren’t looking forward to facing the Reds. Since 2009, the Reds are 19-1 against the Marlins. The Reds have scorched the fish, making them look like minnows, by outscoring them 147-35 during that stretch, shutting them out eight times. Their lone win came in 2011 behind the arm of Fukudome, who threw a no-hitter, striking out four and walking four, en-route to a 2-0 win. The best chance the Marlins would have, outside of luring Fukudome out of retirement, is if the Reds decide to throw Richard, who they’ve hit .436 against and scored 19 runs in 11 innings. Despite the great hitting, Richard is 3-0 with a 10.36 ERA against the Marlins in his career.
Kardinals vs. Astros
The rookie Astros are four games into their young careers, so their stats have not accumulated, and the Kardinals are in just their junior season so their stats are limited. While it’s safe to say the Kards will pitch Boom when he’s in attendance, they may want to call on Walla for game two, as he’s a career 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in 23 innings in May. In the months of June through September, he’s 5-8 with a 4.60 ERA in 82 innings. Fish is the model of consistency when it comes to hitting, as his bat knows no boundaries between Pilot Knob and Sky Hill:
- 24 career games at Pilot Knob: .325-.394-.675 hitter (1.069 OPS) with 13 home runs and 25 RBI
- 22 career games at Sky Hill: .339-.388-.677 hitter (1.065 OPS) with 13 home runs and 26 RBI
Yankees vs. Phillies
Unlike the Kardinals and Astros, the Yankees and Phillies pheature plenty of stats to dissect thanks two of the league’s most consistent veterans: Shirls and Rocket. Shirls owns the Yankees brothers, Rocket and Torpedo, allowing just three hits in 64 career bats. Despite holding JC and The Kid to 2-29, and having a 2.49 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings against the Phillies, Torpedo doesn’t have a win to show for it while his brother, whose arm has seen better days, is 6-1 with a 3.07 ERA in 43 innings against the boys from Philadelphia…or San Diego…or Hopkins…or wherever they’re from.
Pilots vs. Pirates
The Pirates feature two rookies and a sophomore, but Amon and T-Mac have faced the experienced Pilots numerous times. T-Mac has a career .292 batting average against Rex, impressive considering Rex has held opposing batters to a career .169 batting average in his seventh season. Try to follow this: as a hitter, Box has faced Amon more times than any other pitcher during his eight year career and has hit seven home runs (the most he’s had off any pitcher not named Yo!). As a hitter, Amon has hit three home runs off Box which is tied for the most Box has given up (tied numerous ways). J-Zilla will hope T-Mac finds his way into the game, as he’s a .375 career hitter against him, while he’s just 4-46 against Amon and Knuckles. Neighbor, known for his towering bombs, looks to tee off at Sky Hill, where he averages a home run for every six at-bats. In comparison, TJ, one of the leagues most feared sluggers, averaged a home run every five at bats.
