The Hopkins 2007 HRL Twin Cities Wiffleball
season opened Monday night at Central Park, where the relocated Colt
.45s were welcomed to the west side by Western division rivals, the
PADRES!.
Game one went to the .45s as they rallied to defeat the PADRES! 5 to 4.
The pitching matchups featured newcomer, D.J. "DJ" Demming, for the
.45s against Bryan "Shirls" Shirley, Hopkins' reigning Cy Wiffle
winner. Shirls allowed one run on a DJ solo home run through five
innings and showed good early season command on the mound. DJ scattered
four runs through six innings, with the majority of runs the result of
solid hitting by Nine and spotty fielding by the .45s.
In the bottom of the sixth, HRL career saves leader, Jim "Dr. T.
Poindexter" West, entered the game to much fanfare. The .45s sprayed
hits to left and right fields before the reigning Hopkins Sticky Paw
winner, Larry "Cheezy" Storey, made an error on his first fielding
opportunity of the evening, helping open the floodgates for a Colt .45s
rally. After the .45s plated two runs, Dr. T. Poindexter fielded a hard
hit ball for the second out but missed in an attempt to throw out the
tying runner at the plate. On the throw, the .45s scored the winning
run and secured their first victory in Hopkins.
