FINAL

  (17)
Game 7
World Series - Game 7
Reds 2, Red Sox 1 - (17 innings)
In a legendary contest that not only will go down as the longest game in history but also the greatest, Spoon's come-from-behind walkoff 2-run homer in the bottom of the 17th inning gave the Reds a 2-1 win, making them the first ever two-time HRL champions, doing it in back-to-back years, and avenging their 2006 World Series loss to the same Sox.  It is a game that cannot be topped in terms of dramatics.

Spoon's walkoff dramatics upstaged those of Tugboat, who pierced the silent lull of the night when he crushed a solo blast to deep left in the top of the 17th to break the scoreless deadlock just when it felt like neither team could or would break through.  Tugboat screamed as soon as he made contact, as everyone in attendance knew it was gone.

In the bottom of the 17th, the Reds rallied when Dr. Seuss lined the first pitch of the inning off The Man's hip and he beat the play to 1st.  Adam fanned for the 1st out, and after The Man made Spoon look silly with 2 great pitches for strikes, he left a riser up in the zone, which Spoon juped all over, sending it deep to left and over the outstretched arm of a leaping Tuggy to clinch the whole enchilada for the Reds, and leaving the Red Sox tasting defeat, just 2 outs away from completing what would have been an amazing comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.  The wiffle crowd in attendance applauded the amazing and historic moment.

Despite the dramatics of the home runs, the pitching was the real story.  Check these numbers:  In 17 innings of work, Spoon amassed 45 strikeouts, and scattered just 5 hits.  In 16 1/3 innings, The Man racked up 33 K's, allowing eight hits.  The truly amazing stat?  Neither pitcher allowed a walk.

A truly amazing game, and a truly amazing finish to an amazing 2008 season.  The broadcast video below is highly recommended viewing if you wish to see wiffle history at its best.
