Mathis shines in HRL debut to slam mighty Braves
The A's needed David Mathis in a big way, and found out exactly why as he led a furious attack against the tough Braves, the dagger a 3-run Mathis homer in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the mercy rule and end the game. Mathis (1-0) pitched a gem, allowing only a third inning single to go with 3 walks in his five innings of work. Mathis has three long balls in the game, driving in seven. Greg Lund also hit it hard with six hits, the biggie a second inning grand slam to give the A's a 7-0 lead. Larry Storey chipped in with a pair of hits and a pair of walks. Tom Polseno (1-1) of the Braves was hit hard, allowing 13 hits while fanning 4 and walking 4, while getting the Braves' lone hit.
