A's 2, Yankees 1
Call 911! Key hit seals comeback
It was a pitcher's duel to be sure, but what else would you expect when the pitching matchup is Cota vs. Mathis??? With both pitchers baffling the opposition, the game was scoreless through 4 innings. Yankee newcomer Willie McLaurin took Mathis yard to open the scoring and give the Yanks a 1-0 lead after five, before the A's rally would get underway. Cota opened the fifth with an error, allowing Larry to get on base, and two ground ball outs ultimately scored him, tying it at one. In the sixth, Larry worked a huge two out walk, and 911 followed that with a bloop single into straight away center. Larry, intent on scoring from the crack of the bat, held up at third, but Willie dropped the ball in an attempt to throw it into Cota, allowing Larry to easily jaunt home for the win, the A's 8th in a row. Mathis (4-0) pitched brilliantly, allowing only two hits, striking out 8 and walking nobody. Cota (3-2) pitched a great ballgame himself but took the loss, scattering 5 hits, walking a pair and fanning 8.
